With C$171 billion ($131 billion) in assets, OTPP is the largest single-profession pension plan in Canada. It is an independent organisation that invests the pension fund’s assets and administers the pensions of 303,000 active and retired teachers in Ontario. OTPP employs more than 900 employees at the head office in Toronto and investment offices in London, Hong Kong and New York. More than 1500 people work at its real estate subsidiary Cadillac Fairview.
The investment portfolio is segmented into broadly diversified asset groups: public equities, teachers’ private capital, fixed income and alternatives, infrastructure, real estate, tactical asset allocation and natural resources. The fund’s asset allocation is equities 46 per cent, fixed income 41 per cent, natural resources 6 per cent, real assets 24 per cent, absolute return strategies 11 per cent and money market , which provides funding to investments in other asset classes, -28 per cent.
